Prevention

The Impact Quincy Coalition is a program of Bay State Community Services and has been in existence since 1991, delivering a wide range of substance misuse programs. The coalition is represented by key stakeholders reflecting the diversity of the Quincy community.

Impact Quincy is a community-based coalition dedicated to fostering an environment which strengthens communication and relationships within the community. The coalition provides opportunities for the creation and support of community collaborations which promote and sustain healthy living. The coalition’s structure is formed by an Advisory Board, general membership, and task force/subcommittees that are formed to address specific needs at specific times. The coalition has 25 active members and over 180 general members.

Prevention Coalition Priorities

Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC)

Focus: To identify and prevent underage drinking and other drug use among high school students in collaboration with the towns of Braintree, Milton, and Weymouth (cluster model)

Partnership for Success 2015 (PFS15)

Focus: To educate the community, parents and students on prescription medication abuse among high school aged youth in Quincy

Massachusetts Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative (MOAPC)

Focus: To bring community members and concerned citizens together to address opioid abuse and opioid overdoses in collaboration with the towns of Braintree, Randolph, Stoughton, and Weymouth (cluster model)

Tobacco-Free Community Partnership

Focus: Provides technical assistance to 56 cities and towns in Massachusetts and works to pass local regulations to decrease access of tobacco products by minors

Massachusetts Technical Assistance Partnership for Prevention (MASSTAPP)

Focus: Provides technical assistance to all Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Abuse Services funded programs in MA, in collaboration with the Education Development Center in Waltham, and the Partnership for Youth, a program of the Franklin Regional Council of Governments

Prevention Wellness Trust Fund (PWTF)

Focus: To work collaboratively with our community partners to address tobacco use, hypertension, falls among the elderly, and substance abuse, in collaboration with Manet Health Center and the City of Weymouth

Intervention

Our Intervention services consist of Court-Ordered First and Second Offender Driver Alcohol Education courses and Project SAFE, which runs our Intimate Partner Abuse Education program, our Generalized Violence Intervention program, our Adolescent Dating Violence, Teen Violence and Women’s Violence Intervention services.

Intervention Programs

Driver Alcohol Education First Offender Program (DAE)

DAE is a 40-hour structured program licensed and approved by the Department of Public Health and the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services. Referrals come from all district courts in Massachusetts, the Registry of Motor Vehicles and out-of-state courts and agencies. The program consists of an intake interview, sixteen weekly groups utilizing a psychoeducational model, two self-help meetings, a victim impact forum and an exit interview. Referrals may be made for additional treatment if indicated.

Second Offender Aftercare Program (SOAP)

SOAP is a DPH approved intensive, individualized, clinical intervention program for persons who have incurred more than one alcohol and/or other drug-related driving conviction within the judicial system. Participants may enroll in SOAP prior to, or subsequent to their completion of the 2-week Driving Under the Influence of Liquor (DUIL) program. SOAP is flexibly designed to meet the individual needs of the participants, typically lasting for a minimum of one year. Most individuals will participate in an intake assessment, group counseling sessions, quarterly reviews, and a discharge session. Referrals for additional services, such as individual counseling, self-help meetings, or drug screens are also available. This program is approved and licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse.

Intimate Partner Abuse Education Program

A 40-week program for perpetrators of domestic abuse. Participants may refer themselves or may be referred by the courts, prisons, or the Department of Children and Families. Participants examine their use of abusive and/or violent tactics in intimate relationships. Staff assists participants in developing safe actions and healthy belief systems.

Generalized Violence Intervention Program

A 15-week program for males/females, both youth and adults, who are not involved in domestic abuse of their spouse/partner. Participants are referred by the courts, self, prison, and other providers. Staff assists participants with identifying triggers to violence, developing coping skills, and using alternative outlets in the place of violence.

Adolescent Dating Violence/Other Teen Violence Intervention

A 15-week program for adolescents involved in violence toward women, especially dating violence and violence toward parents/guardians.

Women’s Violence Program

A program that provides group education for women who use violent behavior. Participants examine their actions toward others to develop better communication skills. Participants may refer themselves or may be referred by the courts or the Department of Children and Families.
